Paradise - Floral prints

This piece is one of my experimental pieces using black ink and puff binder. I like the look of this piece as it is bold and the lines of details I have drawn into my design are picked up really well.  (A4)

Paradise - Sketchbook research

This is my some of my initial research into the theme of Paradise and the different concepts and ideas people have of Paradise. I wanted to use a range of ideas as I did not have a plan for my final piece yet and wanted to experiment with as many ideas as possible. The idea of money can be someone's Paradise as money is said to be the key to happiness. Also I found by asking my friends and family their thoughts on what paradise was, the majority said it was a holiday on the beach with sun , sand and sea.

Paradise - Floral prints

To ensure that my repeat design will look effective on a final piece I have created some experimental pieces using my screen print with different mediums such as puff binder and ink. Here I have used mainly block colours in my design apart from the green print which also has black printed on top to make it look like a more khaki colour and add depth to the piece. I also tried to experiment with red and yellow colour on the orange print but it didn't turn out as well as I would have hoped.

Paradise - Garment sketches

To develop my ideas for my Paradise project I have sketched some ideas for a garment based on my research on magazine covers. Even though this page is unfinished you can see how my pattern can be adapted into various garments such as a coat or scarf. I plan to develop these further and come up with 8 different designs all of different garments.

Paradise- Artist research

To expand my research for my paradise project I have looked at various artists and designers such as Vivienne Westwood, Frieda Khalo and Claude Monet. I looked into Andy Warhol as I enjoy his use of colour and contour in his work. I particularly liked Warhol's floral pieces as they adapted to my work and showed an interesting use of block colour and detail. I experimented in the style of Warhol on my own designs for prints and added colour into them to create a new composition which I thought worked quite well.

Paradise - Floral prints

For my Paradise project I have created 2 main prints which I will use on my final pieces. I plan to use this repeat pattern for a headdress I will create for my final piece by printing onto different coloured materials and then manipulating the material to create flowers. This repeat pattern is of an Autumn Crocus, a deadly plant that can cause seizures and reparatory failure in humans. (A3)

Paradise - Sketchbook development

Here is more of my Paradise sketchbook focusing on the development of my final pieces. For my final piece I plan to make a devore crop top and a floral headdress inspired by the artist Frieda Khalo. To do this I will use a combination of flowers made from material with one of my designs printed on it and flowers made from different coloured material. To execute this I will use a wire to attach the flowers onto and wrap around the head.

Paradise- Sketchbook research

For my Paradise project I have decided to look at the worlds deadliest flowers based on the idea of the Garden of Eden showing that there is even danger in Paradise. I chose this theme as I like the idea of looking at the anti paradise and the fact that things are not always as they appear, and how something as small and beautiful as a flower could violently kill someone.  Here is some research in my sketchbook into the various deadly plants on the planet.

Paradise - Floral repeat patterns

This repeat pattern of my initial design is what I will be using to execute my final piece. I will use this board to create a screen to print my pattern using devore on black velvet and making a garment out of it. This is pattern is based on the Oleander flower, another poisonous plant which I embellished and added thorns to further my theme of danger and how something beautiful can also be dangerous. (A3)

Paradise - Textile Samples

These are some prints for my Paradise project using my floral prints based on my research of the words most dangerous flowers. This print was based on an Autumn Crocus which I created into a repeat pattern. To execute these pieces I used different coloured inks as a base and then used black on top to create a more eye-catching piece and almost make it look 3D. I enjoy these pieces as I think the experimentation I did worked quite well and I would like to replicate this in my final piece. (A4)

Paradise - sketchbook

My current project is on the subject of Paradise and how it can be interpreted. Here is some sketchbook work I have done investigating different ideas of Paradise in certain contexts such as religion. Here I have looked into how the media have created this idea of the perfect body image and this is some peoples idea of paradise to stay young and beautiful. I have also looked at the historical Fountain of Youth where people go in desperation to stay young and live forever.

Museum of the mind- Collage

For my Museum of the Mind project I used A3 sheets with different block colours on them to draw my observational drawings of my structure on to. I then cut these pieces up into 10cm x 10cm squares and collaged over them with other observational drawings and then put them into different compositions. I like this piece as I think there are several key points of interest and it was an interesting piece to compose.

Museum of the mind - Screen Prints

Here are more experimental textile pieces using a mix of puff binder and ink (top) and experiments with colour (bottom). I enjoyed using puff binder as it was a simple technique which has an interesting texture and made my print more striking. On the bottom print I tried to experiment with different shades of red and tried to vary the basic colours I was using. (both A4)

Museum of the Mind - Screen prints

This piece of work was done my using a screen print of a design inspired by my theme of sea life for my museum of the mind project. I initially did a black screen print onto silk but then experimented with ink and bleach to see the outcomes and create interesting examples of work. (A4)

Museum of the Mind- Etchings

Here are examples of some of the prints I did using an etching plate for the Museum of the mind project. A part of our project was also to try new techniques in different areas of art such as 3D workshops and textiles, here I learned how to create an etching plate and how the process works and the most effective way of getting a clean print. I particularly like the simplicity of the piece and how easy it was to experiment with colours and designs. (8cm x 8cm)

Museum of the Mind- Screen Prints

This was another piece from my Museum of the Mind project. Here I experimented with a pattern inspired by my sea life theme and transferred it into a screen print. I then used this screen print to experiment with various mediums and techniques. Here I have used ink to dye my fabric to create an effective background, and then I used a silver dye to print my design to create a contrast in the colours. (A4)

Museum of the Mind- Acrylic Piece

This is a canvas piece building up acrylic paint in various colours and experimenting with various medias such as Indian ink and wax. This piece was for my Museum of the Mind project, I used various parts of the box as inspiration to make a new composition. I also added 3D textures to this piece by adding sand and glaze to make my piece more interesting and see what effects various medias have.  (A3)

Museum of the Mind- Collograph

This is a collograph based on observational drawings on my structure for my Museum of the Mind project. I particularly like the use of colour in the collograph on the right. I experimented with this print with various block colours and also mixing colours and found the use of mixing colours was more effective and had a better outcome. (10cm x 10cm)

Museum of the Mind project- Final piece

This piece was for my final piece for my final project based on the works of Joseph Cornell. For this project we were asked to pick a subject to base our structures on and create interesting shapes and add objects to them. In my structure I picked the subject of sea life because of the vast possibilities of outcomes and my interest in nature. I added objects such as shark eggs, kelp and images of sea life such as quahogs. (60cm x 60cm)
